Polonnaruwa

OVERVIEW

Polonnaruwa offers a fantastic, easy-to-explore journey into medieval Sri Lankan history. Because the ruins are more compact and structurally intact than older cities, it is highly popular for relaxed bicycle tours. Travelers can effortlessly pedal between shaded woodland paths to explore ancient royal courtrooms, majestic brick shrines, and expansive lakeside views.  The city is a masterclass in ancient urban planning, heavily influenced by both traditional Sinhalese design and South Indian Chola architecture.

  • Gal Vihara (The Rock Temple) – A breathtaking masterpiece of ancient Asian art featuring four colossal Buddha images flawlessly carved out of a single, massive granite rock face.
  • The Polonnaruwa Vatadage – A remarkably preserved, ornate circular relic house decorated with intricate stone guardstones, carvings, and four central seated Buddhas.
  • The Royal Palace of King Parakramabahu – The towering brick ruins of a multi-story royal citadel that originally featured over thousands of rooms and a beautifully carved stone audience hall.
  • Lankatilaka Image House – A cathedral-like Buddhist shrine with massive 12-meter-tall brick walls that lead down a narrow aisle to a colossal, headless stone Buddha statue.
  • Rankot Vihara – The largest completed stupa in Polonnaruwa, a magnificent solid-brick dome built in the old tradition of the classical Anuradhapura kingdoms.

Highlights:

Rising to prominence in the 11th century CE after the fall of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa was the island's second grand royal capital. It stands today as a highly accessible archaeological park, celebrated for its artistic stone masonry, grand kingdoms, and monumental irrigation systems.
